REDD+ and REDD+ Nesting
REDD+ aims to incentivize developing countries to contribute to climate change mitigation actions in the forest sector by:
• Reducing emissions from deforestation;
• Reducing emissions from forest degradation;
• Conservation of forest carbon stocks;
• Sustainable management of forests; and
• Enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
ClimateARK will aim to scale-up and buttress ongoing REDD+ implementation efforts, especially REDD+ Nesting in Kenya, by ensuring a transformative, equitable and inclusive multi-stakeholder approach to nature-based solutions to emission reductions, as identified in Kenya’s REDD+ Strategy
Climate ARK project Theory of Change.
The UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) is supporting the ClimateARK project that seeks to accelerate REDD+ in Kenya for equitable climate mitigation and benefits. ClimateARK seeks to scale-up and buttress ongoing REDD+ implementation efforts, especially REDD+ Nesting in Kenya, by ensuring a transformative, equitable and inclusive multi-stakeholder approach to nature-based solutions to emission reductions, as identified in Kenya’s REDD+ Strategy. It is being implemented by Conservation International (CI) in partnership with CDH Legal (Kieti Law), Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA), and Indigenous Livelihood Enhancement Partners (ILEPA). CI has been supporting the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry (MoECCF) to advance the REDD+ Nesting process in Kenya since 2019. ClimateARK will build on this, and work with the government to clarify policy elements, such as carbon rights and benefit sharing, as well as on technical elements of building foundations of a REDD+ Registry and allocation of the Forest Reference Level (FRL) to site-scale activities (baseline allocation).
Kenya reached an important milestone in December 2021 by formulating its REDD+ readiness elements including the National REDD+ Strategy, and Safeguards Information System. The Forest Reference Level was established in 2020 and is undergoing some improvements while the National Forest Monitoring System is being improved. The country is now looking towards moving into broader REDD+ implementation. REDD+ Nesting has been identified as a fundamental component that will actualize REDD+ implementation in Kenya. Kenya also hosts three REDD+ projects including Chyulu Hills REDD+ Project, Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project and, Mikoko Pamoja. REDD+ in Kenya is coordinated through a National REDD+ Coordination Unit, within the State Department for Forestry, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, under the leadership of the National REDD+ Focal Point.
Skills Training
Empowering stakeholders to make decisions and implement necessary action toward emissions reduction.
PLR framework
Recommendations for policy or legislation on climate change and creating an enabling environment for the scale-up of REDD+ actions on public, private and community lands
Technical framework
Recommendations for other relevant actions to reduce emissions.
Coordination
Improved coordination to facilitate effective and accelerated implementation of mitigation activities from REDD+
The Implementers
The consortium for ClimateARK was created deliberately to capture the necessary expertise in REDD+,REDD+ Nesting, benefits sharing, and aligning Kenya’s REDD+ Strategy with Kenya’s NDCs, while also seeking inclusivity with all stakeholders. CI and Kieti Law will fill the REDD+ knowledge gap and policy needs. KWCA brings important stakeholders to the process, particularly from the forestry, wildlife sectors and county governments,. ILEPA brings their experience, connections with IPs and LCs to the project and will also share their expertise on GESI. The communities KWCA and ILEPA work with are either scoping or being approached by investors and thus it is imperative that they fully understand REDD+.
G.E.D.S.I. Commitment
The Project Management Team (PMT) will ensure gender-disaggregated record-keeping across partners to contribute to monitoring the project’s aspiration to ensure social inclusion (cross-cutting activity); especially to various groups such as women, youth and the elderly, as well as the unique situation of IPLCs and marginalized and vulnerable groups
